Soxels – An Auditive Media Facade

The Prototype of a 5m speaker wall feeding in live pictures to control the position of sound output.

Imagine every speaker playing an instrument of an orchestra. Now imagine every musician starting to move around while playing – that’s Soxels.

The key components of this auditive media facade are the sound pixels, or Soxels, a scaleable array of speakers, and a feed-in point for streaming an endless number of audio channels to provide each speaker with an individual sound stream. DSP technology opens the spectrum from processing natural sounds, transforming them, or generating complex artificial sounds. The developed software is able to mix all integrated soundlayers on any speaker anywhere on the wall and do individual sound manipulation.

Each speaker is driven by an individual power amplifier, which is in turn connected as an end node to an audio DSP matrix. This DSP system processes the incoming audio streams, mixes and manipulates them indivdually for each speaker. Latest IC technology makes it possible to do this enormous processing power within reasonable hardware efforts.

The Soxels hardware works seamless together with software like MaxMSP, Processing, VVVV and many more.
The Soxels Auditive Mediafacade can easily be used for interactive installations by feeding in live pictures.

Collaboration with Simon Schießl, Sounddesign during DMY by Andrea Bassi.

The Soxels project was developed and prototyped with a matrix of 1000 speakers by Simon Schiessl and Felix Hardmood Beck.
It was presented with the Italian sound artist Andrea Bassi during the DMY International Design Festival 2010 for the first time.
