Prelude
- Powers of Ten (Ray and Charles Eames, 1977) takes the viewer on an adventure in magnitudes. Starting at a picnic by the lakeside in Chicago, the famous film transports the viewer to the outer edges of the universe. Every ten seconds one views the starting point from ten times farther out until our own galaxy is visible only as a speck of light among many others. Returning to Earth with breathtaking speed, the viewer moves inward- into the hand of the sleeping picnicker- with ten times more magnification every ten seconds. The journey ends inside a proton of a carbon atom within a DNA molecule in a white blood cell.

Discussion topics/potential questions
In 1972 Charles Eames stated in an interview that “Design is the plan for arranging elements to accomplish a particular purpose.” Where do you position his developed objects (Elephant, Lounge Chair, La Chaise) in this comment? To the question towards the boundaries of design he answered with a contra question “What are the boundaries of problems?”. What are the todays problems that you see that can be addressed and integrated into new developments of chairs? What comes to your mind if you think about design ethics?
