Discussion topics/potential questions
- Think about the Art Nouveau art style (Gaudi's chair), how would you explain a formation of such a style?
- The focus of artists and architects of the De Stiyl art movement is on abstraction and universality through reduction to the essentials of form and colour. What are todays movements that focus on universality?
- The French architect, Jean Badovici, wrote of Grey: “She is modern in every possible aspect of her style, vision and expression, in her disdain of the old emotional, aesthetic and traditional plastic forms. She has understood that our own times have brought, along with new patterns of life, the necessity of new ways of thinking; that the machine age must transform our sensibilities.” What are the traditional forms he talks about? Think about examples? Transfer the statement into our time. What are todays pattern of life? What is needed to address those in todays design?
- The International Style is characterized by an emphasis on volume over mass, the use of lightweight, mass-produced, industrial materials, rejection of all ornament and color, repetitive modular forms, and the use of flat surfaces, typically alternating with areas of glass. What could be adequate materials for the use in furniture designed for such buildings?
