Discussion

  • A future that never has arrived? Do you think the presence of futuristic machine drawings like the ones we saw in class played any role for the development of todays existing machines?
  • What is todays equivalent of those futuristic graphics?
  • Is there a difference between science and science fiction?

Homework

  1. Think about three topics you are interested in. For each topic think about a machine that is related to it. A few examples:
    • I am interested in photography –> I would like to build a machine that applauds every time I take a picture.
    • I work for an environmental NGO –> I would like to develop a machine that visualises how the impoverished fields in the mountains of my home country can be fertilised in a better way.
    • I love art and I am fascinated by robots –> I would like to build a machine that paints pictures for me.
  2. You will give a 5 minutes short overview about your ideas in class to receive everybodys feedback. One of those ideas will be realised in one or the other form by you over the coming semester.
  3. Prepare conceptual drawings for your three ideas (you should add textual annotation, too). The drawings have to be made on the brown drawing paper using black marker. The paper is handed out by Felix. As there is only one paper per student – you only got one shot! The drawings have to be in portrait format and not landscape format (http://www.dummies.com/photography/digital-photography/shooting/landscape-or-portrait-format/). Have in mind that a person that looks at your drawing should understand what your project is about.
