Tuesday, March 17, 2020, 9:00am – 11:30am

Introduction

Please be all online available on zoom today from 09:00 to 11:30 AM. In preparation for this online session, Felix expects everyone to have done the homework for last week, and for this week.

Here are some general answers to questions Felix has received during the last days:

  1. How will the UVF course continue? We will continue as planned and stated in the course schedule. Even if the course entirely shifts to online teaching for the rest of the semester, and we will not be able to meet offline as a group, everyone will finish the semester with a cardboard model. This is our target. We are all flexible on the size, look, and concept of it, but I expect everyone to give the best. Obviously the shift to online teaching will have an impact on everyone's work: For the majority, it means that there is no more access to resources like the laser-cutter, cardboard, printers, etc. I am aware that some might even face power short cuts in their home countries. Be assured that I will look at each individual project on an individual basis, and I look forward to solving your challenges together with you. One of the main challenges in the field of design is the aspect of Designing to Constraints. So, our semester – full of constraints – seems to be the best example of a real-world task. What an amazing learning experience! Let's stay positive and let's be flexible in finding solutions. I am with you on that. For example instead of laser-cutting cardboard, you could take a pen, paper, and scissors for prototyping. I am glad that for your hand drawings there is not much technology needed. ;-)
  2. What about homework? Funny question. Homework remains to the due date. I am encouraging you to stay on-time with the readings and movies and to regularly work on your project to not fall behind the course structure.
  3. How will we handle online meetings? Please check the course schedule to get an overview of the format of our online meetings. We will either meet as a group in zoom during class time (see red box example in the screenshot below), or we meet on an individual basis using zoom for VOIP, chat, screen sharing, and exchange of updates (see purple box example in the screenshot below). Case study presentations will be held in any case to the full class during class time (either via zoom or in real life in the classroom).

Felix updated his open calendar (http://www.felix-beck.de/?/cal/) and is continuously adding sessions called “UVF ONLINE 1:1 Session”. Those are time slots that he will be available for one-on-one sessions on zoom to discuss your projects with you on an individual basis. There should be at least one 30–45 minutes slot per week/per student to discuss the individual project progress. Felix is happy to agree on timings for those one-on-one sessions via email, Skype, or WhatsApp. If online teaching mode continues for the rest of the semester this will be the main form of mentoring.
