Barkin solved the problem: It was a mix of software and hardware issues. Firstly, the duration of the signal was to short – the delay should be ±1000 millis. The pins have to be changed from 1&2 to 2&3 because 0&1 are the serial connection pins of the Arduino (TX for sending commands, RX for receiving commands). Secondly, some of the wires were dead and they weren't conducting electricity. Barkin changed all of them!
Lastly, the majority added the resistor in the following way which caused some problems:
The best way to connect the resistor is as in the button example we used a few weeks ago. See picture below:
